Many heavy-duty truck engine air filters use dry filter media and are intended to be replaced when they reach their specified restriction or service limit. Washing, striking or using high-pressure compressed air on a disposable filter can damage the media and allow abrasive dust to enter the engine.

Other filters are specifically designed to be reusable and may have an approved cleaning procedure.

Why Is a Truck Engine Air Filter Important?

A truck engine requires a large volume of air for combustion.

Before this air reaches the turbocharger and engine, it passes through the engine air filter. The filter captures contaminants such as:

  • Road dust
  • Sand
  • Fine dirt
  • Insects
  • Plant material
  • Industrial debris
  • Other airborne particles

This is particularly important for commercial vehicles operating on construction sites, unsealed roads, farms, mines, ports and other dusty environments.

  5. Cover the clean intake opening if it will remain exposed.

Do not start the engine while the primary filter is removed.

Allowing unfiltered workshop or environmental air directly into the intake can expose the turbocharger and engine to contamination.

Step 3: Use Only the Approved Cleaning Method

There is no universal method for cleaning every truck air filter.

The correct procedure depends entirely on the filter design.

A manufacturer-approved cleaning method may involve:

  • Low-pressure air applied in a specified direction
  • Controlled washing with an approved cleaning solution
  • Gentle rinsing
  • Cleaning and reoiling for certain reusable filter types

Avoid High-Pressure Compressed Air

High air pressure can tear, separate or create microscopic damage in filter media.

Do Not Hit or Beat the Filter

Striking a filter against a tyre, floor, workbench or other surface is not an acceptable cleaning method.

Do Not Wash a Dry Disposable Filter

  1. There is no need to change your air filter so often but if you use your truck in clean cities, you can change it after more than 20000 miles. In the case of dusty roads and heavy use, you should change it between 10000 and 15000 miles. This article is great!
