Truck air brakes use compressed air to transmit braking force and are widely used on heavy commercial vehicles because they can provide reliable braking across trucks, buses and trailers. Their performance, however, depends on an entire system of compressors, reservoirs, valves, air lines and brake chambers working correctly together.
For fleet operators and commercial vehicle owners, understanding how an air brake system works makes it easier to recognise problems, maintain braking efficiency and identify the correct replacement components.

How Do Truck Air Brakes Work?
A truck air brake system begins with the engine-driven air compressor. The compressor generates compressed air, which is stored in air reservoirs until braking force is required.
When the driver presses the brake pedal, also known as the foot or treadle valve, the system regulates compressed air toward the brake chambers. Inside the brake chamber, air pressure is converted into mechanical movement. That movement activates the foundation braking system at the wheel.
Depending on the vehicle, the wheel-end brake may be a drum brake using brake shoes and linings or an air disc brake using a caliper, disc and brake pads.
This distinction is important: air brakes describe how braking force is transmitted, while drum and disc brakes describe how friction is produced at the wheel.
Main Components of a Truck Air Brake System
Air-brake performance depends on several interconnected components rather than a single braking unit.
Air Compressor
The air compressor supplies the compressed air required by the braking system.
If the compressor cannot build sufficient pressure, the braking system may not operate as intended. Compressor condition, drive mechanism and associated air lines therefore form an important part of routine inspection.
Air Dryer
Compressed air can contain moisture and contaminants. The air dryer helps remove moisture before air reaches the reservoirs and other system components.

Air Reservoirs
Air reservoirs, sometimes called air tanks, store compressed air so sufficient pressure is available when braking is required.
Commercial vehicles may have several reservoirs serving different circuits. Maintaining separation between circuits can provide additional protection if one part of the system develops a problem.
Governor
The governor helps regulate compressor operation by controlling when the compressor loads and unloads according to system pressure.
Correct pressure management is important because the brake system must maintain sufficient compressed air without allowing excessive system pressure.
Brake Valves
A commercial vehicle air-brake system can contain several types of valves, each controlling air movement for a particular function.
Examples include:
- Foot or treadle valves
- Relay valves
- Quick-release valves
- Check valves
- Parking brake control valves
- Trailer control valves
- Relay emergency valves
Relay valves are particularly useful when brake chambers are positioned some distance from the driver’s control valve because they allow air stored nearer the brakes to be delivered quickly.

Brake Chambers
Brake chambers convert compressed-air pressure into mechanical force.
Service brake chambers operate during normal braking. On many heavy trucks, spring brake chambers combine the service-brake function with a powerful mechanical spring used for parking and emergency-related braking functions.
Air Lines and Hoses
Air lines connect the different components and allow compressed air to travel throughout the braking system.
Cracks, damaged connections, abrasion and loose fittings can create air leaks. Even a relatively small leak can affect pressure retention and increase the compressor’s workload.
How Can Air Brake Efficiency Be Maintained?
Air-brake efficiency depends on pressure generation, pressure retention and correct operation of the wheel-end brakes.
Regular maintenance should therefore consider the entire system rather than only brake pads or linings.
Important checks include:
- Inspecting air lines and hoses for leaks or damage
- Checking reservoirs and draining moisture where required
- Maintaining the air dryer according to manufacturer recommendations
- Confirming the compressor builds pressure correctly
- Inspecting valves for leaks or sticking
- Checking brake chambers for damage
- Inspecting brake drums, discs, shoes, pads and linings
- Checking brake adjustment where applicable
- Monitoring dashboard pressure gauges and warning indicators
- Inspecting ABS or EBS warning systems

What Are the Signs of an Air Brake Problem?
Air-brake problems can appear through changes in pressure, braking response, sound or vehicle behaviour.
Warning signs may include:
- Air pressure taking unusually long to build
- Frequent compressor cycling
- Audible air leaks
- Low-air-pressure warnings
- Reduced braking performance
- Uneven braking
- Brake drag
- Excessive stopping distance
- Brakes failing to release correctly
- Abnormal brake temperatures
- ABS or EBS warning lights
A warning sign does not always identify the failed component by itself. Low pressure, for example, may result from an air leak, compressor problem, valve fault or another issue elsewhere in the pneumatic system.

ABS and EBS in Modern Truck Air Brake Systems
Modern commercial vehicles may combine conventional pneumatic braking components with electronic control technologies.
An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) monitors wheel behaviour and helps prevent wheels from remaining locked during hard braking.
An Electronic Braking System (EBS) can use electronic signals to coordinate braking commands while still relying on pneumatic components to produce braking force.
These technologies can improve braking control, but compressors, valves, chambers, air lines and friction components must still be maintained correctly.
Electronic control cannot compensate for badly worn or mechanically defective brake components.
Why Correct Air Brake Parts Matter
Truck air-brake systems are designed around specific vehicle, axle and braking-system configurations. Components that appear similar may have different pressure ratings, dimensions, ports, mounting arrangements or operating characteristics.

- Axle position

- Component or OE number

Maintain Truck Air Brakes as a Complete System
Truck air brakes provide the braking force required by many heavy-duty commercial vehicles, but their reliability depends on the complete pneumatic and mechanical system working together.
The compressor must generate air, reservoirs must store it, valves must control it, air lines must retain it and brake chambers must convert pressure into mechanical braking force. At the wheel end, brake pads, linings, drums or discs must then provide the friction needed to slow the vehicle.
