1. Battery or Charging Warning Light Appears
One of the most recognisable signs of an alternator going bad is a battery-shaped warning light appearing on the dashboard.
Despite its symbol, this warning does not necessarily mean that the battery itself has failed. It generally indicates that the charging system is operating outside its expected range.
Possible causes include:
- insufficient alternator output;
- excessive charging voltage;
- a faulty voltage regulator;
- damaged charging cables;
- loose electrical connections; or
- drive belt problems.
A warning light should therefore lead to charging-system testing rather than an automatic battery replacement.
2. Headlights Become Dim or Unusually Bright
Changes in lighting brightness can indicate unstable alternator output.
If the alternator cannot provide enough electricity, headlights and interior lights may become noticeably dimmer. If voltage regulation is faulty, lights may instead appear unusually bright or fluctuate as engine speed changes.
Modern commercial vehicles depend on stable voltage for much more than lighting. Repeated voltage fluctuations can affect electronic control systems and other sensitive components, making early diagnosis important.
3. The Battery Keeps Going Flat
A battery that repeatedly becomes discharged may actually be the result of a charging-system problem.
The battery provides the power required to operate the starter motor. Once the engine is running, the alternator should replenish the energy used during starting and maintain the battery’s charge.
If alternator output is inadequate, the battery gradually loses energy every time the truck operates.
A battery can also fail independently, so repeated discharge alone does not prove the alternator is defective. The battery and charging system should be tested together before parts are replaced.
4. Electrical Equipment Becomes Slow or Stops Working
Commercial trucks contain numerous electrical systems, and a weak alternator may struggle to support them all.

- slower power windows;
- weak cabin blowers;
- flickering dashboard displays;

A driver may hear slow cranking or clicking when attempting to start the vehicle.

A burning smell from the engine compartment requires prompt investigation.
