
An air oil separator removes oil droplets and oil mist from gases leaving an engine’s crankcase before those gases are discharged or routed back into the intake system. In many diesel trucks and commercial vehicles, it forms part of the crankcase ventilation system and helps control oil carryover into components such as the turbocharger, charge-air system and intake.
So, do you really need one?
If the truck’s engine was designed with an air oil separator, crankcase ventilation filter or oil mist separator, then yes, the system should be maintained with the correct component fitted. It is not an optional performance accessory. It performs a specific function within the engine’s crankcase ventilation system.
What Is an Air Oil Separator?
During normal engine operation, a small amount of combustion gas passes the piston rings and enters the crankcase. These gases are commonly referred to as blow-by gases.
Blow-by can carry:
- Fine engine-oil droplets
- Oil mist
- Soot particles
- Fuel vapour
- Combustion gases
- Moisture
The crankcase ventilation system must manage these gases while also maintaining appropriate pressure inside the crankcase.
An air oil separator also called an oil mist separator, crankcase ventilation separator, or in some applications a CCV filter separates much of the suspended oil from the gas stream.

Air oil separators therefore occupy a different role from conventional engine oil filters. An oil filter cleans the lubricant circulating through the lubrication system, whereas an air oil separator removes oil mist from crankcase gases.
How Does an Air Oil Separator Work?
Different separator designs use different methods to remove oil droplets from crankcase gases.

Coalescing Filtration
Fine oil droplets pass through specialised filter media where they combine into larger droplets. Once large enough, the oil can drain away from the gas stream.
Centrifugal Separation
Some systems accelerate or rotate the gas so that heavier oil droplets move outward and separate from the air because of centrifugal force.
Cyclonic or Impaction Separation

Why Do Trucks Need Air Oil Separators?
The separator’s main purpose is oil-mist control within the crankcase ventilation system.
That creates several practical benefits.
1. Reduces Oil Carryover Into the Intake
In closed crankcase ventilation systems, cleaned crankcase gases may be routed back toward the engine’s intake.
Without adequate oil separation, more oil mist can travel with those gases.
Over time, this oil can contribute to deposits within parts of the intake and charge-air system.
An effective separator removes much of the oil before the crankcase gas is recirculated.
2. Helps Protect Turbocharger and Charge-Air Components
Turbocharged diesel engines move large volumes of air through the compressor and charge-air system.
Excessive crankcase oil carryover can contaminate components such as:
- Turbocharger compressor housing

A functioning separator captures oil droplets before they leave the crankcase gas stream.
Depending on the design, that oil may be returned to the sump or lubrication circuit.
The separator does not eliminate normal oil consumption, but it can help prevent excessive oil loss specifically through the crankcase ventilation route.
4. Supports Proper Crankcase Ventilation
Crankcase ventilation is not only about emissions. The system also has to maintain suitable crankcase pressure.
Excessive crankcase pressure can contribute to problems such as oil leaks or stress on seals.
Some oil-separation assemblies incorporate pressure-control features as part of the wider crankcase ventilation system.
For this reason, replacing an original separator with an unsuitable component can affect more than oil separation alone.
5. Helps Keep the Engine Intake Cleaner
Oil mist can combine with soot and other contaminants to create deposits.
Keeping unnecessary oil out of the intake path helps reduce one contributor to this type of contamination.
However, an air oil separator should not be described as a complete solution to carbon build-up. Deposit formation can involve several systems and operating factors.
The separator’s more precise role is to reduce the amount of crankcase-derived oil entering the air-intake system.
What Happens When an Air Oil Separator Fails?
A failed, clogged or damaged separator can affect both oil separation and crankcase ventilation.
Possible symptoms include:
- Increased oil accumulation in intake pipes
- Excessive oil mist from the crankcase ventilation system
- Higher-than-normal oil consumption
- Oil around ventilation hoses or connections
- Crankcase pressure problems
- Oil leaks around seals or gaskets
- Unusual whistling or ventilation-system noises
- Engine warning messages on systems that monitor crankcase ventilation
These symptoms are not exclusive to the air oil separator.
For example, excessive oil inside the intake may also be associated with turbocharger problems, engine wear or another fault. Similarly, excessive crankcase pressure may result from high blow-by caused by worn engine components.
The separator should therefore be inspected as part of a proper diagnosis rather than automatically replaced whenever oil is discovered in the intake.
Can a Clogged Air Oil Separator Cause High Crankcase Pressure?
It can, depending on the system design.
If a filter-type separator becomes severely restricted, crankcase gases may have difficulty flowing through the ventilation system.
Restricted ventilation can contribute to abnormal crankcase pressure.
This can potentially lead to:
- Oil leakage
- Seal problems
- Dipstick displacement in severe cases
- Oil being forced into areas where it should not normally accumulate
Some systems use pressure-regulating or bypass features to manage crankcase pressure, so the exact symptoms vary between engines.
If abnormal crankcase pressure is suspected, technicians should inspect the complete crankcase ventilation system rather than only the separator element.
How Often Should an Air Oil Separator Be Replaced?
There is no universal replacement interval for every air oil separator.
Some systems use replaceable filter elements, while others use long-life centrifugal or integrated separators. Certain designs may have maintenance intervals based on kilometres, engine hours or scheduled engine servicing.
Replacement requirements depend on:
- Engine manufacturer
- Separator design
- Vehicle application
- Operating conditions
- Engine hours or mileage
- Blow-by levels
- Maintenance schedule
Always follow the vehicle or engine manufacturer’s specifications.

Air Oil Separator vs Oil Filter: What Is the Difference?
These components are often confused because both deal with engine oil.
